Evaluation of Thriller

In what ways does you media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

During the title sequence of Casino Royale the director relies upon iconic and symbolic signification to establish the genre of the film. One key signifier is the gun seen at (0:33 in the opening credits). Due to this we incorporated a gun as a main feature of the opening sequence (0:42 – 0:44) This effectively established the genre of the film while also providing a launch pad for our animation. Throughout are animation there is different iconic signifiers about the genre for example the city landscape that comes up. (0:57 – 1:02) This is iconic to the kind of area it is going to be set in. (outer London.) other iconic signifiers include are hero matt in dramatic cheesy pose (0:47 – 0:52). This gives the audience a small introduction to the hero in the film. Also the red blood that comes out of him is iconic to death and danger in the film which are codes and conventions of the thriller genre. The opening of are thriller just like the opening of casino royale relies on iconic signifiers to link it in with the codes and conventions of are genre and also to establish the genre of the film its self.
Another film in the same genre as are film and Casino royale is Donnie Brasko (Mike Newell, 28th February). The opening of this is a lot different to Casino Royale and our thriller but it fits into the sub-genre of are thriller. It isn’t as directly linked to are thriller as Casino Royale is but there are some similarities. From the start of the film there are simple titles on a black background (0:45 – 1:00) like we use for are titles at the start of are thriller (0:13 – 0:31). This helps to establish the genre of are film as it is a classic crime thriller effect as it is good to fade into the opening of the thriller. The rest of the opening doesn’t have much relevance to are thriller opening.
Yet another film in the same genre as are film is Goodfellas (Martin Scorsese, September 21, 1990). This starts in the same way as both are thriller and Donnie with credits on a black background (0:11 – 0:43). This is a common convention of crime thrillers. Like Donnie Brasko the rest of the opening doesn’t have may similarities to are thriller opening.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our Thriller represents race differently to other spy thrillers. Are main character is a black male, which is different to the typical stereotype of a spy being a white male. I think this works well with our thriller as it draws it away from what someone would expect from a spy thriller. We could of taken it further away from the typical spy thriller by choosing a woman as are main character. We have also used stereotypes to construct are main character as he is a male, he is dressed smart and there is no women in the opening to show that the men in this film are dominate over the women. Age is represented differently to a typical thriller as Matt is younger than you would expect a main character in a film like this to be so this show how society is changing in the way that teenagers can now be in the position of guns. Also the gun in are opening also helps us to establish who are social group is.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I think that the film company best suited to produce our film would be Columbia Pictures as these are the same people that produced Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace. This is relevant as these are the films we based are opening around. The use of iconic signifiers through the opening credits of Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace link them to are opening very well as that is what we based are opening around. We did this as we felt that the use of iconic images in are opening sequence would give are film a cheesy feel to it which is what we wanted are film to be. I also think that the music that we used helped to reinforce the idea that are thriller is meant to look like the opening of Casino Royale as is has the same modern James Bond feel about it.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The main audience for are thriller film would be 15 to 20 year olds as I think that they are the main people that I think would be interested in this kind of thriller film as I would say that are film is a “Bond” for the younger generation. I think this as are main character is 17 years of age himself so younger people will find it easier to connect to him and I think that this will attract are younger audience. I think that Matt was a good choice of actor as his looks and his style make him a good hero for are thriller. I also think that are choice of music would help us to connect to are target audience as it is fast paced and is put tighter very well. It also links very well with are genre of film that we are going for. I think that the race and gender of Matt will also attract are audience as are main character is a black male we are fitting the stereotype of are spy with him being a male but we are moving away from it by having a black main character as most bond style spies are white.

How did you attract/address your audience?

Our thriller attracted and addressed our audience very well I think. The first way in which we attracted are audience is through are main character, Matt who is the same age as are target audience so because of this are audience can connect to are main character. We didn’t do this intentionally it was because we only had certain age range to choose from. I think this does attract are target audience though.
Another way in which our thriller addressed are audience is through the music that we used. We used fast paced, rock music which I think will attract are audience as this is the kind of music they will be listening to. It also works really well with the visuals on screen. This entices are audience and engages them to read on.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of construction the product?

Over the past few months that we have spent shooting this opening I have learnt a lot about the technologies of making a film. I have learnt about using camera’s, editing on the computer and in general how the opening of a thriller is made. If you look at the first shots we took all those months ago the camera wasn’t really steady but now if you look at the final product all the shots are pretty much still which I am proud of. I also think that my skills as a team member have improved as well as I am a lot more willing to do what people tell me to do. My editing skills have improved a lot as I not know how to make a series of shots flow to make a scene rather than just a few different shots. Think that my understanding of the film industry has changed over the time we have been shooting this film as I now understand how long it takes and how much planning goes into something like this.

Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Since are preliminary task I feel that I have learnt a lot about the process involved in the making of a thriller. I feel like I have learnt a lot about camera, editing, sound and mise-en-scene of films. Looking at are continuity task and are final thriller opening there is a huge difference in quality which show how our group has improved over the last few months. I am really happy with how far me and my group members have come since we started this task. I do feel like my fellow group members have improved more than me.
What I feel I have learnt from this task is how to be a better group member as I started the task not that willing to work as a group but as time went on and became more and more confident, I just wish I could go back and start again as I think I would be a lot better. I also learnt a lot about editing film material as at the beginning of this I was that good at editing footage but not I feel a lot more confident about it.

Many families like to travel on the spur of the moment. Here is one way where you may be able to find an all inclusive last minute Mexico vacation.

We don't have any idea of what will happen in our lives for tomorrow, next week and for the next years; life is full of surprises and with decisions to be made in the last minute, so do as moving. Life can give us emergency situations that requires us decide as soon as possible.
